Inspiring Schools: San Saba High School’s Pink-Out Tradition

Every October, schools and communities across Texas rally together in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and few do it as powerfully as San Saba High School. Since 2010, the San Saba Student Council has led their community in a Pink-Out campaign combining spirit, service, and heartfelt impact. To understand what makes this tradition so special, we spoke with Robin Ellis, San Saba Student Council sponsor, who shared the story behind their efforts and the lasting difference it’s making in the community.

A Tradition Rooted in Service

San Saba’s Pink-Out tradition began in 2010, with funds originally going to the American Cancer Society. In 2015, the Student Council shifted donations to the Never Surrender Cancer Foundation of San Saba County. By keeping contributions local, the campaign found even deeper community support. Since then, the Student Council has proudly donated over $48,000 to Never Surrender, directly helping neighbors, teachers, parents, and friends battling cancer.

Students Leading the Charge and Making an Impact

At its heart, Pink-Out is student-driven. Each year, senior Student Council officers design the official Pink-Out shirt, with recent black shirts featuring bold pink graphics becoming fan favorites. Student Council members take on the challenge of selling shirts, supported by sponsors and officers guiding the effort. But participation extends far beyond the council! Staff, the Golden Armadillo Band, football teams, cheerleaders, and the Dilloettes all proudly wear their shirts. Local organizations even join in, making it a true community-wide effort.

In a special tribute, all of San Saba’s Pink-Out designs since 2010 were collected to create a t-shirt quilt, which was auctioned at Never Surrender’s fundraiser to give back once again. It’s a perfect symbol of how each year’s efforts stitch together into something much bigger.

Stories that Stay with You

Beyond fundraising, the campaign is about connection. The annual Pink Out pep rally includes moving moments where community members who have battled cancer in the past or are currently fighting cancer share their stories. From former teachers to parents and local supporters, these speakers bring hope and resilience into focus for students.

One year, the Student Council sponsor’s niece, a cancer survivor, spoke to the crowd, bringing both tears and inspiration. Another year, Jon Beck, a beloved parent and band sponsor, shared his story after receiving support from Never Surrender. His memory now lives on in the spirit of the event.

For San Saba, the campaign is deeply personal. Hearing familiar faces talk about perseverance in the face of adversity leaves a lasting impression and inspires students to give back and serve others long after graduation. These stories, along with photos of check presentations and pink-clad students, remind everyone why this tradition matters.

Partnering with Gandy Ink to Make It Happen

Gandy Ink is honored to be part of San Saba’s Pink-Out story. From brainstorming designs to ensuring smooth order fulfillment, our team (especially Morgan, the sales representative for San Saba) works closely with the Student Council to maximize their efforts and donations. As Robin shared, “Gandy has been fabulous to work with…a great partner in this endeavor.” Morgan echoed her sentiment by saying, “I love helping schools bring big ideas to life with confidence. It is a joy to be a small part of San Saba’s Pink Out success!”

Lessons for Other Schools

By partnering with an organization directly impacting their neighbors, the campaign becomes both personal and powerful. Their advice for other schools? Find a cause close to home. When the community knows their support is making a real difference locally, the results are extraordinary. And, of course, choosing the right apparel partner helps make the process simple and successful.

Carrying the Spirit Forward

For San Saba High School, Pink-Out is more than a fundraiser; it’s a celebration of courage, community, and compassion. Each year, the campaign raises funds and teaches students the importance of service and perseverance. It’s proof that schools and communities can unite to create a lasting impact.

We are proud to stand alongside San Saba and schools across Texas as they lead meaningful Pink-Out traditions. Their story is a powerful reminder that spirit wear can be more than just a shirt; it can be a statement of hope.
